Designer 3D Prints Working Replica of Original Nintendo Console

Posted by 3DPrint360 Staff on

He goes by the name of daftmike, and he just created one of the sweetest 3d printed objects of all time - the original Nintendo console known as NES.

It's not just an art piece.  The NES 3d printed by daftmike plays many of the original Nintendo games by reading fake Nintendo cartridges rigged with NFC cards.  NFC cards are essentially smart chips that transmit electronic information to another chip nearby.

"It was inevitable. I have a Raspberry Pi, I have a 3D printer, I'm a huge nerd," daftmike wrote on his blog.  "At some point I was going to print a case for it in the shape of the old Nintendo Entertainment System.  In the end, this project turned into more of a love-letter to the NES than just printing a case."

Referring to the Raspberry Pi, which serves as the brains inside the Nintendo system, daftmike notes that he placed it inside the 3d printed console - one of many available on the 3d printing file library Thingiverse.

The project, which daftmike notes was harder than he originally expected, can be replicated by following his instructions on the blog.

"This project took longer that I first thought, but I enjoyed it immensely. It sharpened up my Arduino coding, I learned some Python and used Linux properly for the first time. I also really improved my 3D printing ability, both in CAD and the printing process itself."
