What do you get when you mix Carnegie Mellon, MIT, 3d printing and Mars? You get one step closer to 3d printing homes on Mars, with the Mars City Design project.
3d printing in space and creating buildings on earth with 3d printing have both already occured, and their methods are currently being perfected. However, merging the two ideas to create structures that can house astronauts on Mars is an entirely different challenge.
”It is not enough to just travel to Mars and survive, now we must develop a way in which we can sustainably live and love on Mars,"Vera Mulyani, founder of Mars City Design said. "It is essential that we call on a new generation of thinkers and innovators to make this a reality."
The project invited scientists, designers and universities to submit their best ideas and plans for creating a livable, self-sustaining colony on Mars. Finalists have been chosen and their submissions will now be fine tuned with the help of aerospace engineers. Once that is completed, the plan is to 3d print the colonies in the Mojave desert within 3 years.
“We can think of how to use every single stage of the design process and engage in sensible waste-management from the beginning,” Mulyani told Quartz this month. “With Mars, we have a chance to start afresh.”
